Buy a Shinobi if you only need a bright monitor. Buy a Ninja if your camera has HDMI and you want to record ProRes or ProRes RAW on the camera. Buy a Shogun if you need SDI, a bigger screen and more connections, and a Sumo if you want a 19 inch monitor for the video village. That one split settles most Atomos choices.
This guide compares the Atomos models we list in India, using the maker's specifications, so you can choose by what the box does and not only by the name.
Atomos models at a glance
| Line | What it does | Screen | Inputs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shinobi | Monitor only, no recording | 5.2 inch or 7 inch | HDMI, and 3G-SDI on the 7 inch |
| Ninja | On-camera monitor and recorder | 5.2 inch | HDMI, and 12G-SDI on the Ninja TX |
| Shogun | Monitor, recorder, and on some models a switcher | 7 inch | HDMI and 12G-SDI |
| Sumo and Shogun AV-19 | 19 inch monitor, recorder and switcher | 19 inch | HDMI, 12G-SDI and 3G-SDI |
Shinobi: a bright monitor, nothing extra
The Shinobi II and the Shinobi GO are 5.2 inch, 1500 nit HDR monitors at 210 g. They take HDMI in, show 4K UHD at up to 30p and 1080p at up to 60p, and run off an NP-F battery or USB-C power. They do not record.
The Shinobi 7 is a 7 inch monitor with a 2200 nit screen at 577 g. It takes HDMI 2.0 up to 4Kp60 and 3G-SDI up to 1080p60. The Shinobi 7 RX adds a Wi-Fi 6 receiver for a wireless feed.
Choose a Shinobi when your camera already records well and you want a larger, brighter screen with scopes, false colour and LUTs.
Ninja: record on the camera
The Ninja is a 5.2 inch, 1000 nit monitor-recorder at 360 g. It records ProRes, DNxHD and H.265, and ProRes RAW up to 6Kp30 over HDMI. The Ninja Ultra adds higher frame rates, up to 8Kp30, 6Kp60 and 4Kp120.
The newer models use CFexpress Type B or USB-C media and have a 1500 nit screen. The Ninja RAW adds USB-C camera control on supported cameras. The Ninja TX GO adds Wi-Fi 6E and Camera to Cloud. The Ninja TX adds 12G-SDI and wireless timecode, with recording up to 6Kp60 or 8Kp30.
Choose a Ninja when you want to record a better codec than your camera offers, or capture RAW from a mirrorless body over HDMI. Check the maker's compatibility list for your camera first, because RAW depends on the camera model.
Shogun: bigger screen, SDI and more connections
The Shogun Ultra is a 7 inch, 2000 nit monitor-recorder with HDMI 2.0 and 12G-SDI in and out, RAW recording up to 8Kp30, Wi-Fi 6E and a gigabit Ethernet port. It weighs 730 g.
The Shogun Classic has a 3000 nit, 7.2 inch screen. It takes four HD-SDI inputs for live switching, with four ISO recordings and a program recording.
Choose a Shogun when you shoot SDI cinema cameras, need a very bright screen for outdoor work, or want to switch between several cameras.
Sumo and Shogun AV-19: 19 inch for the video village
The Sumo 19SE is a 19 inch, 1200 nit monitor with HDMI 2.0, two 12G-SDI and two 3G-SDI inputs, and it records RAW up to 6Kp30 over SDI. The Shogun AV-19 is a 19 inch 4K rackmount monitor-recorder-switcher at 5.22 kg. It switches up to four 1080p60 SDI inputs and records to CFexpress.
Choose these when a director or client needs a large, accurate screen on a stand or in a rack.
