Why a pen beats a mouse for retouching

Pressure sensitivity is the whole point. A brush that responds to how hard you press lets you build up a dodge or a mask gradually instead of in flat steps, which is what makes skin retouching look like skin rather than plastic. Tilt recognition adds angle-dependent brush behaviour for illustration work.

Tablet or pen display

An Intuos-style tablet is a drawing surface — you look at your monitor while drawing on the pad. It is cheaper, more portable and takes a few days to adapt to. A Cintiq pen display puts the screen under the pen, so you draw directly on the image. That is more intuitive and considerably more expensive. For photo editing, a mid-size tablet is usually enough; for illustration, a display earns its cost.
