Why a dry cabinet is not optional in India

Fungus on lens elements is the single most common way Indian photographers lose the value of their glass. Coastal cities and the monsoon months push ambient humidity well past the level at which spores germinate inside a lens barrel, and once fungus etches a coating the damage is permanent — cleaning costs a significant fraction of the lens value, if it is repairable at all. A dry cabinet holds relative humidity in the 35–45% band where fungus cannot establish.

Sizing a cabinet

Buy larger than your current kit. Capacity is quoted in litres, and bodies with lenses attached, plus flashes, drones and batteries, fill a cabinet faster than expected. Check the humidity range is adjustable, since film and paper storage need different settings from digital gear. Cabinets run continuously at very low power, so running cost is negligible against the value of what is inside.
