Why brightness matters in India

A standard 300-nit monitor is unreadable in open Indian daylight. High-bright panels rated 1000 nits and above are what make exterior shooting workable without a hood or a tent, which is why they carry a significant price premium over generic monitors. If most of your work is exterior or daytime, this specification matters more than resolution.

The monitoring toolset

Waveform and vectorscope give objective exposure and colour readings rather than a subjective look at a screen. False colour maps exposure to colour bands so skin tones can be placed precisely. Focus peaking confirms critical focus on fast lenses. And 3D LUT loading lets a director view a graded approximation of log footage on set, so clients see intent rather than flat, washed-out log.

Choosing a size and input

Five and seven inch monitors mount on-camera for the operator. Larger director and client monitors sit on a stand for the rest of the crew. Check inputs: HDMI-only monitors suit mirrorless bodies, while SDI is needed for cinema cameras and long cable runs, and cross-conversion between the two is a genuinely useful feature on mixed-camera sets.
