DJI Mini 4 Pro Hard Case: Which Size Fits the Drone, RC 2 and Batteries

How to size a hard case for a DJI Mini 4 Pro kit from DJI's published dimensions, with three foam layouts, a fit table and what changes for the Mini 5 Pro.

A DJI Mini 4 Pro case needs to hold the folded drone (148 x 94 x 64 mm), the controller and your spare batteries, with at least 20 mm of foam around each item. With a DJI RC 2, the whole kit fits an 11.7 litre case such as the Vantage 270S, which is 380 x 270 x 115 mm inside. If you only carry the drone, a smaller case works. Below: DJI's published sizes, the fit maths for each layout, and what changes for the newer Mini 5 Pro.

The numbers you are sizing from

Size a drone case from the maker's own specification page, never from a marketplace listing or a guess. These are DJI's published figures, length x width x height:

  • DJI Mini 4 Pro, folded without propellers: 148 x 94 x 64 mm. Takeoff weight under 249 g with the standard battery.
  • DJI RC 2: 168.4 x 132.5 x 46.2 mm without control sticks, and 62.7 mm tall with the sticks fitted. About 420 g.
  • Mini 4 Pro Intelligent Flight Battery: 2590 mAh, 18.96 Wh, about 77.9 g.
  • Mini 4 Pro Intelligent Flight Battery Plus: 3850 mAh, 28.4 Wh, about 121 g.

DJI's FAQ lists two controllers for the Mini 4 Pro: the DJI RC 2 and the DJI RC-N2. The RC-N2 has no built-in screen and uses your phone instead. DJI does not publish its dimensions on the Mini 4 Pro spec page, so if that is your controller, measure it with a steel rule, sticks on, before you cut foam.

What about the DJI Mini 5 Pro?

The Mini 5 Pro is a real, current model, and it is slightly bigger. DJI lists it at 157 x 95 x 68 mm folded without propellers, and 249.9 g at takeoff. That is 9 mm longer, 1 mm wider and 4 mm taller than the Mini 4 Pro. Its batteries are also different: 19.52 Wh for the standard pack and 33.51 Wh for the Plus.

DJI's Mini 5 Pro spec page lists the DJI RC-N3 at 104.2 x 150 x 45.2 mm and about 320 g, and the Mini 5 Pro FAQ refers to flying it with the DJI RC 2. Those few extra millimetres matter, because a pocket cut for a Mini 4 Pro will not take a Mini 5 Pro. If you plan to upgrade, cut for the larger drone from day one.

The 20 mm rule, applied to a Mini kit

This is the same method as our drone hard case sizing guide. Every item gets at least 20 mm of foam between it and the case wall, and 20 mm between it and the next item. For depth, take the tallest item and add 40 mm: 20 mm underneath and 20 mm above.

Layout 1: Mini 4 Pro and RC 2 side by side

Length: 20 + 148 + 20 + 168.4 + 20 = 376.4 mm. Across, the controller is the wider item: 20 + 132.5 + 20 = 172.5 mm. Depth: the drone is 64 mm tall and the RC 2 with sticks is 62.7 mm, so 64 + 40 = 104 mm.

The Vantage 270S is 380 x 270 x 115 mm inside. Every number fits. Across the drone you use only 134 mm of the 270, which leaves a strip up to about 116 mm wide beside the drone for batteries or a charging hub.

Layout 2: turned sideways

Turn the drone so its 94 mm width runs along the case. Length becomes 20 + 94 + 20 + 168.4 + 20 = 322.4 mm, and across becomes 20 + 148 + 20 = 188 mm. That frees about 57 mm of length at one end and a wide strip along the far side. Some people prefer this because the drone and controller both lift out from the front edge.

Layout 3: drone only

If you fly from your phone or carry the controller in a jacket pocket, the drone alone needs 20 + 148 + 20 = 188 mm by 20 + 94 + 20 = 134 mm by 104 mm deep. The Vantage 180 is 235 x 180 x 106 mm inside. It fits, but with only 2 mm to spare in depth, so cut the base foam carefully and do not add a thick lid layer.

Which case fits which Mini kit

All figures use DJI's published dimensions and the 20 mm rule. Inner case sizes are width x length x depth in millimetres, as listed on each product page.

Kit Space needed (mm) Case Inner size (mm) Verdict
Mini 4 Pro only 188 x 134 x 104 Vantage 180 235 x 180 x 106 Fits, 2 mm spare in depth. No room for the controller.
Mini 4 Pro and a battery row, no controller Drone 188 x 134 x 104, plus batteries Vantage 225 300 x 225 x 132 Fits, with room for batteries. The RC 2 will not fit beside the drone.
Mini 4 Pro and RC 2 376.4 x 172.5 x 104 Vantage 270S 380 x 270 x 115 Fits side by side, with a battery strip beside the drone.
Mini 5 Pro and RC 2 (turned sideways) 323.4 x 197 x 108 Vantage 270S 380 x 270 x 115 Fits. Side by side it would need 385.4 mm, too long for this case.
Mini 5 Pro and RC-N3 321.2 x 190 x 108 Vantage 270S 380 x 270 x 115 Fits, with spare length for batteries.
Mini 5 Pro only 197 x 135 x 108 Vantage 225 300 x 225 x 132 Fits. The Vantage 180 is 2 mm too shallow for it.

These layouts cover the drone, the controller and a row of batteries. If you also carry ND filters, spare propellers, a charging hub or a power bank, add them to your layout before you choose. The Hard Case Size Finder runs the same check against every size, and if you are between two sizes, go one up.

Why the Vantage 270S suits a Mini kit

  • IP67 sealing. Dust-tight, and protected against immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes with the lid closed and latched. A sudden shower on a hill trek or spray on a boat does not reach the drone.
  • Automatic pressure equalisation valve. It prevents vacuum forming inside, so the lid still opens normally after a flight or a long drive up to altitude.
  • Carries STANAG 4280, DEF-STAN 81-41 and MIL-STD-810H. The 270S does not carry ATA 300; if you need that rating, the Vantage 270D does. Ratings are per model, so check the product page of the case you pick.
  • Light. 1.86 kg empty, 414 x 345 x 129 mm outside.
  • Temperature range of minus 30 ยฐC to 90 ยฐC, so a closed car in a Rajasthan summer is not a problem for the case itself. Your batteries are another matter: keep them out of direct sun.

Every Vantage case ships with solid foam sheets, a snap-off foam cutter and convoluted foam in the lid, and carries a 5 year warranty. You cut the drone pocket to its exact outline rather than plucking cubes. Trace, cut straight down, and leave a finger slot beside each item.

Cutting the foam for a Mini 4 Pro

  1. Fit the gimbal protector, fold the arms and lay the propellers flat against them. Trace that shape, not the box the drone came in.
  2. Leave a foam shelf under the gimbal so the camera head is supported and does not hang.
  3. Cut the RC 2 pocket with sticks fitted, or cut two small slots beside it for the removed sticks so they stay with the controller.
  4. Cut each battery its own slot. Do not stack batteries loose in one pocket where the terminals can rub together.
  5. Add a finger slot beside the drone so you lift it by the body, not by an arm.

Batteries and flying

Every Mini 4 Pro and Mini 5 Pro battery DJI lists is well under 100 Wh. Under IATA passenger guidance, spare lithium ion batteries of 100 Wh or less travel in carry-on baggage only, protected from short circuit, never in checked bags. Airlines can add their own limits, so check with yours before a domestic flight.

So if the drone case goes in the hold, take every spare battery out and carry it in the cabin in a battery pouch. If the case goes in the cabin, compare the airline's size limit with the case's outer dimensions: 414 x 345 x 129 mm for the 270S, and 258 x 243 x 117 mm for the 180. Our guide to flying with camera gear in India covers the rest.

One more habit for the monsoon: a sealed case keeps humidity in as well as rain out. If the drone comes back damp, dry it before you close the lid and drop in fresh silica gel.

Frequently asked questions

Will a DJI Mini 3 case fit a Mini 4 Pro?
Only if the pocket was cut with room to spare. DJI lists the Mini 3 at 148 x 90 x 62 mm folded, so a Mini 4 Pro is 4 mm wider and 2 mm taller. Cut for the larger drone and both will sit snugly.

Will a Mini 4 Pro case fit a Mini 5 Pro?
Usually not in the same pocket. The Mini 5 Pro is 157 x 95 x 68 mm folded, 9 mm longer than the Mini 4 Pro. The Vantage 270S still takes a Mini 5 Pro with an RC 2 or RC-N3, but you need to recut the foam.

What is the smallest hard case for a Mini 4 Pro?
For the drone alone, the Vantage 180 at 235 x 180 x 106 mm inside. For drone, controller and batteries together, the Vantage 270S.

Can batteries stay inside the case on a flight?
Only if the case travels in the cabin. Spare lithium batteries are not allowed in checked baggage under IATA guidance.
