A protective case is a rigid, sealed box with foam cut to hold one set of equipment still, so water, dust, drops and crushing never reach it. Choose one by the job it does: measure the gear, add at least 20 mm of foam on every side, then match that to the case's inner dimensions and the ratings your work actually needs. The same case that carries a camera also suits test instruments, tools, lab kits, drones, audio gear, laptops and field survey equipment. This guide maps each use to a size.
What makes a case "protective"
Plenty of boxes call themselves protective. The ones that earn the word share five things:
- A sealed lid. A rubber gasket and latches that pull the lid down tight. Look for an IP67 rating: under IEC 60529 the 6 means dust-tight and the 7 means protection against immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes.
- A rigid shell. Injection moulded polypropylene flexes slightly on impact instead of cracking or denting. Every Case Kavach Vantage case uses a polypropylene and nylon shell.
- A pressure valve. A sealed box can vacuum-lock after a flight or a climb to altitude. An automatic pressure equalisation valve stops that while keeping the seal.
- Foam that fits. The shell keeps the world out. The foam stops the gear hitting the walls. Loose equipment in a hard shell can still break itself.
- A temperature range to match the site. Vantage cases are rated from minus 30 ยฐC to 90 ยฐC, except the Vantage 195L at minus 10 ยฐC to 80 ยฐC.
These cases are often called Pelican-style cases, after one well known brand. The term describes the design, not a particular maker.
Hard carry case or soft bag?
A padded bag is fine for gear that stays in your hands. A hard carry case earns its place when the equipment rides in a vehicle, a train luggage rack or an aircraft hold, or works outdoors where the weather turns fast. In India that covers a lot: monsoon rain on a site visit, fine dust on a highway project, a service van parked in the afternoon sun, a courier who stacks boxes. A soft bag passes a crushing load straight to what is inside. A rigid shell spreads it.
Uses beyond cameras, and which size fits
Each case below is listed by inner dimensions, width x length x depth in millimetres, from its product page. Treat the table as a starting point: your own measurements decide.
| Use | Typical contents | Case | Inner size (mm) | Volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Handheld test instruments | Meter, probes, leads, spare cells | Vantage 180 | 235 x 180 x 106 | 4.4 L |
| Slim instrument or audio kit | Flat devices, receivers, cables | Vantage 195L | 316 x 195 x 81 | 4.9 L |
| Compact lab or first-aid kit | Small instruments, sealed consumables | Vantage 225 | 300 x 225 x 132 | 8.9 L |
| Compact drone | Folded drone, controller, batteries | Vantage 270S | 380 x 270 x 115 | 11.7 L |
| Laptop or tablet with charger | One laptop up to 16 inch, cables | Vantage 335S | 465 x 335 x 125 | 19.4 L |
| Field survey electronics | Receiver, data controller, antenna parts | Vantage 290S | 426 x 290 x 159 | 19.6 L |
| Tool kit or larger instrument set | Hand tools, meters, accessories | Vantage 350 | 500 x 350 x 194 | 33.9 L |
| Heavy kit on wheels | Mixed equipment, several layers | Vantage 405-TR | 538 x 405 x 190 | 41.4 L |
| Bulk or bulky equipment | Large items, long parts, spares | Vantage 600 | 820 x 600 x 450 | 221.4 L |
All fifteen sizes are in the waterproof hard cases collection. The Hard Case Size Finder checks your measurements against every one of them.
Notes by use
Test and measurement instruments
Meters, testers and analysers are built to be carried, but their displays, probe tips and connectors are not built to be dropped. Give the instrument its own pocket, cut a separate slot for each lead so cables do not wrap around the screen, and keep spare cells in their own slot away from metal tools. The small Vantage 180 and 225 suit a single handheld kit.
Medical and lab kits
A sealed case keeps dust, rain and knocks away from instruments and packed supplies on a field visit or an outreach camp. Two limits to keep in mind. The case is a protective container, not a certified medical, sterile or temperature-controlled container, so follow the rules that apply to your supplies. And an IP67 seal keeps moisture in as well as out: pack items dry, and change silica gel regularly.
Tools
Tools are heavy for their size. A loaded case gets dropped and dragged more than a light one, so pick the size by weight as well as fit. The Vantage 350 weighs 3.9 kg empty. Past that, a wheeled case saves your back: the Vantage 405-TR has wheels and a telescopic pull handle, and the Vantage 600 has wheels and a carrying handle.
Drones and audio
Drones need foam cut to the folded outline with support under the gimbal; see our DJI Mini 4 Pro case guide for a worked example. Wireless mic kits and small recorders suit the slim Vantage 195L. Note that the 195L carries IP67 only and has the narrower minus 10 ยฐC to 80 ยฐC range.
Laptops and tablets
A laptop is flat and wide, so the case has to be wide more than deep. The Vantage 335S is built around that shape. Our laptop hard case guide works through which laptops fit.
Field survey gear
Survey receivers, data controllers and the small parts that go with them spend their day in dust, sun and rain, then ride back in a vehicle. Measure each item, including antennas and mounting adaptors, and lay them out flat before choosing. The Vantage 290S gives 159 mm of depth; the Vantage 405L goes to 245 mm for taller items.
Ratings: read them per model
Every Vantage case is IP67 rated and has an automatic pressure equalisation valve. Beyond that, ratings differ by model:
- ATA 300 (an airline transport case standard): most models, but not the 195L, 270S, 405-TR or 460L-TR.
- STANAG 4280 and DEF-STAN 81-41: every model except the 195L.
- MIL-STD-810: revision H on most models, revision G on the 335D-TR, 405-TR and 460L-TR, and not listed for the 195L.
- UN4H2, a UN packaging mark: only the 270D and 405-TR. Whether a particular shipment of regulated goods can travel in it depends on the rules for that material and your carrier, so confirm before relying on it.
If a rating matters for your work, check the product page of the exact case. Each rating tests something different, so match it to how the case will travel.
Foam: stock or custom
Every Vantage case ships with solid foam sheets, a snap-off foam cutter and convoluted foam in the lid. You trace each item and cut a pocket that fits it exactly, which holds up far longer than pre-cubed pluck foam. For a fleet of identical kits, or when a cleaner finish matters, we also make custom laser-cut foam inserts on request: send your item list through the Size Finder page.
Four mistakes to avoid
- Buying by outer size. Always compare the space inside.
- One case for everything. A case sized for one job protects better than a big box of mixed kit.
- Closing the lid on damp gear. A sealed case traps humidity. Dry first.
- Ignoring the loaded weight. Two medium cases travel better than one very heavy one.
Frequently asked questions
Is a waterproof equipment case really waterproof?
An IP67 case is dust-tight and protected against immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes, with the lid closed, latches locked and a clean gasket. Wipe grit off the seal before you close it.
Can I use a camera case for tools or instruments?
Yes. The shell, seal and foam do not care what goes inside. Cut the foam to your items and choose the size by inner dimensions and loaded weight.
Which case should I pick for heavy equipment?
Anything that will be heavy once loaded is easier on a wheeled case. Four Vantage models have wheels: the 335D-TR, 405-TR, 460L-TR and 600.
How long is the warranty?
Case Kavach Vantage cases carry a 5 year warranty.
