Lens fungus is not a risk in Indian humidity โ€” it is a schedule. Here is the humidity range that stops it, how to size a dry cabinet for your kit, what it actually costs to run, and what to do if fungus has already started.

If you store a camera in India without humidity control, fungus is not a risk โ€” it is a schedule. Lens fungus grows whenever relative humidity stays above roughly 60% in still, dark air, which describes the inside of a camera bag in Mumbai, Kochi, Kolkata or Guwahati for four months of every year. The fix is to keep your gear between 35% and 45% relative humidity, and an electronic dry cabinet is the only method that holds that range without you thinking about it. This guide covers why fungus starts, what humidity level actually stops it, how to size a cabinet for your kit, what it costs to run, and what to do if you already see the web.

What lens fungus actually is

Fungus inside a lens is a living organism growing on the internal glass surfaces. Its spores are already in the air everywhere โ€” they are in your room right now โ€” and they land on optical elements every time you change a lens.

Spores need three things to become a colony:

  • Moisture. Sustained relative humidity above about 60%. This is the one you can control.
  • Food. Dust, skin oils, pollen, and the trace organic vapours that come off lens lubricants and rubber seals over years.
  • Darkness and still air. A closed bag or a cupboard shelf is ideal. Fungus does not establish well in bright, moving air, which is where the old advice about leaving gear in sunlight comes from.

You cannot remove the spores and you cannot remove the food. You can remove the moisture. That is the entire strategy.

Why it matters more in India than almost anywhere

Monsoon relative humidity in coastal and eastern India routinely sits between 75% and 90% for weeks at a time. That is roughly double the level at which fungus stops growing.

Two things make it worse here. First, the humid season is long โ€” in Kerala, coastal Karnataka and the North-East it can run five months or more. Second, most gear spends that season stored rather than used, because shooting slows during heavy rain. Long storage in still, humid, dark conditions is precisely the environment a colony needs.

Even in dry regions, this is not a non-issue. Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad spend most of the year well below the fungus threshold, but July through September still pushes RH into the 70s and 80s. A short humid season is enough to start a colony that then survives the dry months quite happily.

If you are in a genuinely dry climate and shoot regularly, a well-sealed cabinet with monitored silica gel may be adequate. Everywhere along the coast, in the east, and in the North-East, it is not.

The number that matters: 35โ€“45% RH

Store your gear between 35% and 45% relative humidity. This is the range every serious cabinet targets, and it is worth understanding both ends of it.

Above 55โ€“60%, fungus becomes viable. The higher you go, the faster it establishes.

Below about 30%, you introduce a different, slower problem. Lens helicoid grease, shutter lubricants, rubber grips and leatherette all rely on some ambient moisture. Kept extremely dry for years, seals and rubber can harden and lubricants can change behaviour. This is a long-horizon concern rather than an urgent one, but it is the reason โ€œas dry as possibleโ€ is the wrong instinct.

The 35โ€“45% band avoids both failure modes. If your cabinet lets you set a target, 40% is a sensible default for mixed camera and lens storage.

Why silica gel is not a real solution

Silica gel does work, in the narrow sense that it absorbs moisture. As a storage strategy it fails for three reasons.

It saturates. A sachet has a finite capacity. Once full, it stops working and simply sits there. In monsoon conditions this can happen in days.

It gives you no feedback. Colour-indicating gel helps, but you are relying on noticing a colour change on a sachet buried in a bag. Most people do not check until something has already gone wrong.

It needs regeneration. Silica gel must be dried in an oven periodically to be reusable. Almost nobody does this on schedule for years on end.

A genuinely airtight box with fresh, monitored, regularly regenerated silica gel and a cheap hygrometer inside can hold safe humidity. It requires ongoing discipline for as long as you own the gear. A dry cabinet requires plugging it in.

How dry cabinets work

Camera dry cabinets do not use a compressor or a water tray. Almost all of them use a desiccant module โ€” typically a molecular sieve or zeolite element โ€” sealed into the cabinet wall.

The module absorbs moisture from the sealed interior. On a cycle, it gently heats itself and vents that moisture to the outside air, then returns to absorbing. Nothing to empty, nothing to replace, no consumables. That regeneration cycle is why a dry cabinet can run for a decade unattended, and it is the fundamental difference from silica gel.

This also explains two things owners often ask about. The cabinet will feel slightly warm near the module โ€” that is the regeneration cycle, and it is normal. And it needs a few centimetres of clearance behind it, because it is venting moisture into the room.

Running cost: cheaper than you expect

This is the most common objection and it is based on a wrong assumption. Dry cabinets are not refrigerators. A typical unit draws roughly 8 to 15 watts โ€” comparable to an LED bulb โ€” and only the desiccant module consumes power, not the whole volume.

At 10W running continuously, that is about 7.2 kWh per month, or well under โ‚น100 a month at typical Indian domestic tariffs. Larger cabinets draw somewhat more, small ones less.

Set against a single lens repair, or the resale value lost on a fungus-marked body, the running cost is not a meaningful factor in the decision.

Sizing: how to pick a capacity

The single most common mistake is buying too small. Two reasons: rated litres are gross internal volume, and shelves, spacing and irregular shapes mean you will realistically use 60โ€“70% of it. And kits grow.

Buy roughly double the capacity you think you need today. The price gap between adjacent sizes is small; replacing a cabinet in two years is not.

What to look for when comparing models

A digital display, not a dial. You want to read actual current humidity, not trust an unmarked knob. Every cabinet in the table above has one.

An adjustable target. Being able to set 40% rather than accepting a fixed factory setting matters if you store film, documents or electronics alongside camera gear.

A proper door seal. This is what separates cabinets that hold their setting from ones that cycle constantly. Check the gasket runs unbroken around the full frame.

Adjustable or removable shelves. A 400mm telephoto will not fit a fixed-shelf cabinet. If you own or plan to own long glass, confirm you can remove a shelf.

A lock, if the cabinet lives in a shared studio.

Setting it up correctly

  1. Give it 24 hours before trusting the reading. A cabinet loaded with humid gear in July takes time to pull the interior down. It is working; let it stabilise.
  2. Leave 5โ€“10cm behind and above for the module to vent.
  3. Do not put it in a damp corner. A cabinet in an unventilated store room fights the room continuously.
  4. Take lens caps off, or at least the rear caps. A capped lens is a sealed micro-environment the cabinet cannot reach. This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that matters most.
  5. Open bags and cases inside it, or store gear out of the bag. Foam padding holds moisture.
  6. Leave it running year-round. Switching it off after monsoon defeats the purpose; the interior equalises with the room within hours.
  7. Store batteries separately if the cabinet runs very dry, and never store lithium cells at full charge long term.

If you already have fungus

Look through the lens toward a bright light at an angle. Early fungus looks like a fine translucent web or a spidery filament, usually starting at the edge of an element. It is not dust and it is not haze.

Act immediately. Fungus at the filament stage is often cleanable by a service centre. Left alone, the colonyโ€™s metabolic by-products etch the coating and eventually the glass itself, and etching is permanent โ€” no cleaning recovers it. The window between โ€œcleanableโ€ and โ€œpermanently markedโ€ is months, not years.

Isolate the affected lens now. Do not put it in a cabinet with healthy gear, and do not put it back in a shared bag.

Get it to an authorised service centre for your brand. Home remedies involving UV lamps or ammonia solutions circulate widely and can kill surface growth, but they do not reach fungus between cemented elements, and they carry real risk to coatings.

Then fix the storage, or you will be doing this again next monsoon.

A note on buying used: always inspect for fungus before purchasing a second-hand lens in India, and be sceptical of listings photographed only from the front. This is the single most common defect in the Indian used market.

Frequently asked questions

Does a dry cabinet remove existing fungus?
No. It stops growth by removing moisture, which prevents the colony spreading, but dead fungus and any etching remain. Cleaning is a service-centre job.

Can I store other things in it?
Yes โ€” documents, film stock, hard drives, watches, currency and stamp collections all benefit. If you are storing film or paper alongside gear, set the target toward the higher end of the range.

Is it safe to leave running 24/7?
Yes, and that is how it is designed to be used. Continuous low-power operation is the whole model.

Do I still need silica gel in my camera bag?
For a bag in active use during monsoon, a fresh sachet is a reasonable supplement. It is not a substitute for controlled storage between shoots.

What if there is a power cut?
A sealed cabinet holds its humidity for many hours passively. Ordinary load-shedding is not a problem.

Which humidity should I set?
