Sling, backpack or hard case

A sling swings round to the front so you can change a lens without taking the bag off or putting it on the ground — which in a crowded Indian venue is often not an option at all. A backpack distributes weight properly for long days and travel, and is the only sensible choice above a few kilos. A sealed hard case is transport protection: for an aircraft hold, a vehicle roof, or a shipment, where impact and water are the threats rather than convenience.

What to check

Divider flexibility, because your kit will change. Whether the laptop compartment actually fits your machine, not a generic 15-inch. Whether zips are covered or weather-sealed — dust ingress is constant in Indian conditions and monsoon rain arrives without warning. And whether it opens against your back, which keeps the panel that touches the ground away from the side that touches you.

Hard case ratings

IP67 means dust-tight and able to survive temporary immersion. A pressure equalisation valve lets air balance during a flight without admitting water — without it, a case sealed at altitude can be very hard to open on landing. Cubed foam gives a custom fit; dividers reconfigure more easily.

Storage is a separate problem

A bag protects gear in transit but traps humidity at rest. Store lenses in a dry cabinet, not in the bag — a closed bag is where fungus grows.
