Collection: Lenses

Lenses outlast bodies. A camera you buy today will be replaced in four or five years; good glass bought today will still be working in fifteen. That makes lens choice the more consequential decision.

Prime or zoom

Primes have one focal length. In exchange they are sharper, faster — f/1.4 and f/1.8 are common — lighter and cheaper than a zoom of similar quality. That extra speed is what makes indoor and evening shooting possible without pushing ISO, and it is what produces genuine background separation for portraits. Zooms cover a range, which is why event and wedding photographers live on them: you cannot change position mid-ceremony, so you change focal length instead.

The focal lengths and what they are for

Wide (14–35mm) for architecture, interiors and environmental context. Standard (35–85mm) for documentary, street and portraits — 50mm and 85mm are the classic portrait choices. Telephoto (70–300mm and beyond) for sport, wildlife and compressing a background behind a subject. Macro for product, jewellery and detail work, which is a large commercial category in India.

Before you buy

Check the mount matches your body — Nikon Z, Sony E and Canon RF are not interchangeable without an adapter. On an APS-C body, multiply the focal length by roughly 1.5 to know what you will actually see. And weigh the lens: an f/2.8 zoom you leave at home because it is heavy is worth less than an f/4 you carry.
