Porta lights and sun guns

A sun gun is a compact, high-output on-camera light for news, event and run-and-gun work where you need light on a subject immediately and cannot set up a stand. LED porta lights in 150W and 350W ratings cover interview and indoor coverage from a stand. Check whether output is dimmable — a fixed-output light on a close subject will blow out skin tones, and dimming is the difference between a usable light and one you end up bouncing off a wall.

Light stands and support

Stand height and footprint decide what you can actually light. A 9-foot stand covers most interview and product setups; 14-foot stands are for lighting from above or backlighting a wide set. Match the stand's load rating to your heaviest fixture with its modifier attached, and sandbag anything tall — an Indian outdoor location with any breeze will take down an unweighted stand and the light on it.

Cables

Extension cables in 5, 10 and 15 metre lengths cover the gap between where power is and where the light needs to be, which on location is never short. USB-C, micro-USB and AUX cables handle device charging and audio. Carry spares of anything a shoot depends on — cable failure is the most common and most avoidable delay on set.
