Collection: Headphones

Studio monitoring headphones, noise-cancelling wireless over-ears and in-ear monitors.

Closed-back or open-back

This choice matters more than any spec. Closed-back headphones isolate — they keep outside noise out and your audio in, which is what you need on set for monitoring a recording and on a commute. Open-back headphones let air through the earcup, producing a wider, more natural soundstage and more accurate reference for mixing and editing — and leaking sound in both directions, which makes them useless anywhere but a quiet room.

Monitoring versus listening

Studio monitoring headphones aim for a flat, uncoloured response so you hear problems rather than a flattering version of your mix. Consumer headphones deliberately boost bass and treble because it sounds better on first listen. If you are editing audio or checking a recording on location, a flat pair is a working tool; if you are listening on a flight, it is not what you want.

Noise cancellation

Active noise cancellation works best on constant low-frequency sound — aircraft cabins, train rumble, traffic, air conditioning — and much less well on speech and sudden noise. Compare battery life with ANC enabled rather than the headline number, and check whether there is a wired mode, since a dead battery on a working pair should not mean silence.
