What a slider adds

A slide is the cheapest way to make a static shot look produced. Linear movement across a subject creates parallax — foreground and background shifting at different rates — which reads as depth in a way a zoom never does. For product, food and interview work it is the difference between a shot that looks locked off and one that looks directed.

Parallax and pan

Sliders with built-in parallax and pan let the head rotate as the carriage travels, keeping a subject centred through the move. Done manually it takes practice; motorised versions repeat the move exactly, which matters for timelapse and for matching takes.

What to check

Track length against your shot and your transport — longer tracks give more dramatic moves but stop fitting in a bag. Payload rating against your rig. And carriage smoothness, since any stutter in a slow move is visible on screen.
