The best colour grading monitor from Flanders Scientific depends on your delivery: for HDR grading, buy an XMP. For HD and SDR grading, buy a DM. Within each line the choice is size and brightness. A colourist's desk usually means the XMP310 or XMP270, a client theatre means the XMP551 or XMP651, and an SDR suite means the DM242.
Best Flanders Scientific monitor by grading job
| Job | Model | Why |
|---|---|---|
| HDR grading desk | XMP310 | 31.5 inch, 1000 nits, 1,500,000:1, 3840 x 2160 |
| Compact HDR, DIT cart | XMP270 | 26.5 inch, same panel specification |
| HDR client theatre | XMP551 | 55 inch, 4000 nits, 8,000,000:1 |
| Large HDR room | XMP651 | 65 inch, 4000 nits, 8,000,000:1 |
| SDR and HD grading | DM242 | 24 inch, 10-bit, 1920 x 1200 |
| Portable SDR check | DM160 | 15.6 inch OLED, 5.8 lbs (2.6 kg) |
The HDR desk
FSI states the XMP310 qualifies as a Dolby Vision mastering monitor, and it can be calibrated with GaiaColor AutoCal using a supported probe. The XMP270 suits a smaller suite.
The client room
The XMP551 and XMP651 put 4000 nits in front of the whole room. Compare them in the XMP550 vs XMP551 vs XMP651 guide.
The SDR suite
The DM242 is the 10-bit option for HD work, and the DM160 is the portable one.
Before you buy
- Confirm your deliverables: HDR needs an XMP.
- Check 12G-SDI support for UHD, or 3G-SDI for HD.
- Ask which calibration probe you need.
Start with your deliverable, not the screen
The most common buying mistake is choosing a monitor first and a workflow second. Ask what you deliver. If projects go out in HDR, you need a monitor that can show HDR, which means an XMP. If everything is delivered in SDR at HD, a DM covers it, and the money goes further on a better SDR panel than on HDR capability you will not use.
Desk size and viewing distance
A colourist usually sits close to the screen, which is why the XMP310 at 31.5 inches and the XMP270 at 26.5 inches suit a desk. Both give 1000 nits and 1,500,000:1 contrast in UHD. For a room where clients sit back, the 55 inch XMP551 or 65 inch XMP651 puts the same image in front of more people. On the SDR side, the 24 inch DM242 is the one to look at for a desk, with a 10-bit panel and a 1920 x 1200 screen.
Calibration is part of the purchase
A reference monitor stays a reference only if it is checked. FSI says the XMP310 can be calibrated with GaiaColor AutoCal volumetric calibration using a supported probe, with no computer needed. Whichever model you choose, ask which probe it needs and who will run the calibration, before the monitor arrives.
Check the signal path early
- XMP monitors: four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs. Confirm your grading system can send UHD over 12G-SDI and that your cables and converters support it.
- DM monitors: two 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs, which suits HD workflows.
- Mounting: the larger XMP models use a 300 x 200 mm VESA pattern.
Three example set-ups
A solo colourist grading HDR: an XMP310 on the desk. A small post house with an HDR client room: an XMP310 at the desk and an XMP551 on the wall, which share QD-OLED technology. An edit and QC room delivering HD: a DM242, or a pair of DM231 monitors for side-by-side checks.
Questions to ask before you order
- What do I deliver: HDR, SDR or both?
- How big is the desk or wall, and how far will the clients sit?
- Can my grading system output the signal this monitor needs, for example UHD over 12G-SDI?
- Which calibration probe does this model need, and who will run it?
- Do I need a second monitor for client viewing as well as the grading desk?
Message us with your answers and we can point you to the right model and tell you what is in stock, rather than guessing from a spec sheet.
What not to buy a reference monitor for
Reference monitors are for judging picture accuracy, not for general computer use. They are built around SDI signals, calibration and consistency. If you only need a good screen for editing at a desk, a regular colour-accurate display costs less and does the job. A reference monitor earns its place when the picture on it is the picture you are delivering.
Frequently asked questions
Which monitor is best for colour grading?
For HDR, the XMP310 on a desk. For SDR, the DM242.
Do I need a reference monitor to grade?
A reference monitor shows what is in the signal, which is why colourists use one. A consumer screen cannot do that.
Can I order one in India?
Yes. Availability changes, so message us for current stock and delivery time.
Is a reference monitor the same as a studio display?
No. A reference monitor is built for accurate, repeatable picture judgement with professional signal inputs such as SDI.
Can I grade HDR on a DM monitor?
The DM line is the FSI HD SDR range. For HDR, look at the XMP series.
Which size should a colourist choose?
Most grade on a 26.5 to 31.5 inch XMP at the desk, with a larger 55 or 65 inch monitor for client viewing.
