Choose a Flanders Scientific XMP if you grade or master HDR. Choose a DM if your work is HD and SDR. The XMP series is 3840 x 2160 QD-OLED, from 26.5 to 65 inches and 1000 to 4000 nits peak brightness. The DM series is 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200, from 15.6 to 24 inches, using RGB OLED on the DM160 and wide-gamut LCD on the others. Match the size to the room: a desk, an edit suite or a client theatre.
Flanders Scientific (FSI) makes reference monitors, meaning screens built to show a colourist or engineer exactly what is in the signal. This guide compares all nine models we list in India so you can narrow the choice in a few minutes.
XMP vs DM: the real difference
XMP is for HDR and UHD. Every XMP is a 10-bit QD-OLED panel at 3840 x 2160 with four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs and a fanless design. Peak brightness and contrast climb with the model number: 1000 nits and 1,500,000:1 on the XMP270 and XMP310, 2000 nits and 4,000,000:1 on the XMP550, and 4000 nits and 8,000,000:1 on the XMP551 and XMP651.
DM is for HD and SDR. The DM line is FSI's range of advanced high definition SDR reference monitors. Brightness is 300 to 400 nits fullscreen, and each model has two 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs.

Which one for which job
A colourist's desk: XMP270 or XMP310
The XMP310 is a 31.5 inch desktop HDR mastering display. FSI states it qualifies as a Dolby Vision mastering monitor, and it can be calibrated with GaiaColor AutoCal using a supported probe, with no computer needed. The 26.5 inch XMP270 has the same panel specification in a more compact body, which suits a DIT cart or a smaller suite.
A grading theatre or client room: XMP550, XMP551 or XMP651
Go large when clients sit behind the colourist. The XMP550 is 55 inches at 2000 nits. The XMP551 keeps the 55 inch size and doubles peak brightness to 4000 nits on a 4th generation panel, and the XMP651 stretches the same panel to 65 inches. The larger XMP models are fanless and carry a 300 x 200 mm VESA mount.
Edit, QC and compact HD monitoring: the DM range
The DM160 is the light option at 5.8 lbs (2.6 kg) without feet, and it fits in 6RU with the DM160 rack ears. The DM211 and DM231 are 21.5 and 23.8 inch wide-gamut LCDs, which work well in pairs. The DM242 adds a 10-bit panel and a 1920 x 1200 screen, and FSI calls it the successor to the DM240 and DM241.
What to check before you buy
- HDR or SDR deliverables. If you deliver HDR, buy an XMP. If you only deliver SDR, a DM covers it, since you do not need HDR brightness.
- Your signal path. XMP monitors take 12G-SDI, so confirm your cables, converters and source can carry UHD over SDI. DM monitors take 3G-SDI at HD.
- Room and viewing distance. A 65 inch screen needs far more space than a 26.5 inch one. Measure the wall or desk first.
- Mounting. The 55 and 65 inch models use a 300 x 200 mm VESA pattern. Plan the stand or wall mount before the monitor arrives.
- Calibration. Reference monitors only stay accurate if they are checked. Ask which probe you need before ordering.
What makes these reference monitors
A consumer screen is tuned to look good. A reference monitor is built to be predictable, so a colourist can trust what is on screen and a client in another city sees the same result. Across the XMP range, FSI builds that in a few ways:
- Native SDI inputs. Four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs take the signal straight from the grading system or camera, with no HDMI adapter in the chain.
- 1:1 pixel mapping and Ethernet control. The picture is shown pixel for pixel, and the monitor can be controlled over the network.
- Wide colour. The 55 and 65 inch models cover about 90% of Rec.2020.
- Fanless design. No fan noise in a quiet grading room, and less to maintain.
The XMP310 adds GaiaColor AutoCal volumetric calibration with a supported probe and no computer needed. FSI also states that it qualifies as a Dolby Vision mastering monitor. The XMP270 and XMP310 share panel technology with the 55 inch XMP550, which helps a facility that wants its desk monitor to match a larger one in the client room.
How to read the model numbers
In the XMP range the first digits are the size class and the ending hints at the generation. The 270 and 310 are desktop sizes at 1000 nits. The 550 is a 55 inch model at 2000 nits. The 551 and 651 move to a 4th generation panel at 4000 nits, in 55 and 65 inches. Our XMP550 vs XMP551 vs XMP651 guide goes deeper on the large three, and the DM series comparison covers the HD range.
