Pick the XMP550 if 2000 nits is enough, the XMP551 if you need 4000 nits at 55 inches, and the XMP651 if the same 4000 nits has to fill a 65 inch screen. All three are 3840 x 2160 10-bit QD-OLED reference monitors with four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs and a fanless design. The differences are peak brightness, contrast, panel generation and size.
XMP550 vs XMP551 vs XMP651 compared
| Model | Screen | Panel | Peak brightness | Contrast | Mount |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XMP550 | 55 inch | 10-bit QD-OLED | 2000 nits | 4,000,000:1 | 300 x 200 mm VESA |
| XMP551 | 55 inch | 10-bit QD-OLED (4th gen) | 4000 nits | 8,000,000:1 | 300 x 200 mm VESA |
| XMP651 | 65 inch | 10-bit QD-OLED (4th gen) | 4000 nits | 8,000,000:1 | 300 x 200 mm VESA |
XMP550 or XMP551: the brightness question
The XMP550 and the XMP551 share a 55 inch body. The XMP551 doubles peak brightness from 2000 to 4000 nits and doubles contrast to 8,000,000:1 on a 4th generation panel. If you master HDR highlights that approach the top of the range, the extra headroom lets you see them instead of guessing. If your deliverables sit well below that, the XMP550 shows the same resolution and inputs.
XMP551 or XMP651: size only
The XMP651 uses the same 4000 nit, 8,000,000:1 panel specification as the XMP551, stretched to 65 inches. Choose it when clients or a full team watch from further back. Measure the room first, because a 65 inch screen changes where everyone sits.
What to check before you buy
- Signal path. 12G-SDI carries UHD, so check cables, converters and sources.
- Mounting. Plan the stand or wall mount for the 300 x 200 mm VESA pattern.
- Smaller desk? The XMP310 and XMP270 offer 1000 nits in desktop sizes.
What every model in this trio shares
The three monitors have more in common than the model numbers suggest. All are 3840 x 2160 10-bit QD-OLED panels with four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs. All cover about 90% of Rec.2020, all are fanless, and all use a 300 x 200 mm VESA pattern for stands and wall mounts. So the choice is not about features. It is about brightness headroom and screen size.
The XMP550: the established 55 inch
FSI describes the XMP550 as HPA Award winning, a 55 inch reference mastering monitor at 2000 nits peak and 4,000,000:1 contrast. It is built for large grading suites, client rooms and mastering facilities that want a big HDR reference display. If your deliverables are mastered to common HDR targets and you do not need the very top of the brightness range, it already does the job at 55 inches.
The XMP551: when highlights matter
The XMP551 keeps the 55 inch size but moves to a 4th generation QD-OLED panel with 4000 nits peak and 8,000,000:1 contrast. FSI positions it for flagship HDR mastering rooms that need the highest peak brightness it offers at that size. Choose it when you grade bright highlights such as sun glints, neon and specular reflections, and want to see how they behave instead of estimating.
The XMP651: the same panel, a bigger room
The XMP651 carries the same 4000 nit, 8,000,000:1 specification as the XMP551 on a 65 inch screen. FSI describes it as the largest FSI QD-OLED reference display, aimed at premium grading theatres and client suites. If six people sit behind the colourist, the extra ten inches earns its place. If it is mostly you and one client, the 55 inch size is easier to place.
A practical way to decide
- Who watches? A screen for one grader and one client is a 55 inch job. A room with a team behind you is a 65 inch job.
- What peak do you master to? If the answer is "the highest we can," the 551 or 651. If your targets sit lower, the 550 covers them.
- What is the room? Measure the wall, the seating distance and the doorway. A 65 inch monitor is a delivery and installation job, not just a purchase.
- Do you also need a desk monitor? The XMP310 and XMP270 give 1000 nits in desktop sizes on related panel technology.
Setting up a large XMP in your room
A 55 or 65 inch monitor changes the room around it, so plan the installation before the order. Fix the mounting first: all three use a 300 x 200 mm VESA pattern, so pick a stand or wall mount rated for the screen size and check the wall behind it. Next, run the SDI. Each monitor has four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs, so decide which inputs carry your grading output and which stay free for a second source. Then think about light. A reference monitor is judged in a controlled room, so the position of windows, lamps and a neutral wall behind the screen matters as much as the monitor itself. Finally, plan calibration with whoever supports your facility, since the monitor is only a reference while it is checked.
