What makes a camera a cinema camera

Internal ND filters let you hold a wide aperture and a 180-degree shutter in bright Indian daylight without screwing filters on and off between setups — on a run-and-gun day this alone saves hours. Proper XLR audio inputs with manual gain mean sound is recorded on the camera rather than on a separate device needing sync. Timecode support keeps multi-camera shoots aligned in the edit. And the bodies are built for continuous recording without the thermal limits that stop a stills body mid-take.

Codecs and the grading pipeline

Cinema cameras record formats built to be graded — ProRes, ProRes RAW, and manufacturer RAW variants — rather than heavily compressed delivery codecs. That gives the colourist latitude to push exposure and shift white balance without the image falling apart. It also means large files, so plan media and offload drives around your shoot length before the shoot, not on the day.

Building the rig around it

A cinema body is the centre of a system, not a complete kit. Budget for a monitor you can judge exposure on, V-mount power, media, and support. The camera is often the smaller half of the total.
