If you shoot mostly stills and want a full frame Sony for less money, the a7 III is still a capable camera. If you shoot video, want sharper detail, or want a better screen and viewfinder, the a7 IV is worth the upgrade. The a7 IV adds a 33 MP sensor, 4K 60p in Super 35mm mode and a vari-angle touchscreen.
This guide compares the two bodies and the kits we list in India, using published specifications, so you can decide whether the step up fits the way you shoot.

Sony a7 III: the proven full frame all rounder
Best for: stills shooters, wedding and event photographers, and anyone stepping up from a crop sensor camera on a tighter budget.
The Sony a7 III body pairs a 24 MP sensor with 693 phase detection points, 10 fps shooting and in body stabilisation. The 24 MP files are easier on storage and editing than 33 MP files. Battery life is its strong point, with a CIPA rating of 710 shots.
If you do not own a lens yet, the Sony a7 III with 28-70mm lens kit gives you a ready to shoot setup.
Limits: the 4K output tops out at 30p, and the viewfinder and rear screen are lower resolution than on the a7 IV.
Sony a7 IV: the hybrid upgrade
Best for: hybrid shooters who make photos and video, and anyone who crops hard or prints large.
The Sony a7 IV body moves to 33 MP and the BIONZ XR processor, with 759 phase detection points and continuous Eye AF for humans, animals and birds. The 3.69 million dot viewfinder is a clear step up from the a7 III. The vari-angle screen helps with vlogging, low angles and tripod work.
For video you get 4K 30p with oversampling in full frame mode and 4K 60p in Super 35mm mode. Both cameras shoot Full HD slow motion, with the a7 IV rated up to 120 fps.
Pick the Sony a7 IV with 28-70mm lens kit for a single box starting setup, or the Sony a7 IV with backpack if you also need a bag. Check availability on each before you plan around it.
Limits: battery life is lower than the a7 III on the same NP-FZ100 battery, and the 33 MP files need more card space and a faster computer.
Is the upgrade worth it?
- Upgrade to the a7 IV if you shoot video, vlog, crop in often, or want the better viewfinder and the vari-angle screen.
- Stay with or buy the a7 III if you shoot mostly photos, need long battery life, or want to put the savings into a better lens.
- Moving from a crop sensor body: either camera is a big step. Choose by video need first, then budget.
- Already own an a7 III and it works for you: the extra resolution alone rarely justifies a swap. Upgrade when you hit a real limit, such as 4K 60p or the screen.
Before you order
- Lenses: both take E-mount lenses. Our E vs FE lens guide explains which ones suit full frame.
- Batteries: both use the NP-FZ100. Read original vs third party camera batteries before buying spares.
- Cards: 33 MP files and 4K video need fast cards. See the memory card guide.
- Availability: stock changes, so check each kit before you plan a shoot around it.
